Join us for Honrando Nuestra Historia (Honoring Our History), a month-long celebration running from September 15 to October 15. Organized in partnership with institutions across the state, this series of events highlights the rich archaeological heritage and cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latin American & Caribbean communities in Florida. Discover how archaeology helps preserve the diverse stories and traditions of longstanding Latin American and Caribbean communities—deepening our collective understanding of Florida’s past and present.
These events aim to connect archaeology with often overlooked communities, particularly those from the global majority. We recognize that the experiences of people from over 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries living in the U.S. are incredibly diverse. Yet, these communities are often grouped under a single umbrella, despite differences in nationality, race, gender, language, generation, immigration status, and more.
At the same time, we acknowledge that not all voices within these communities receive equal attention. Historical and social inequalities continue to shape whose stories are heard and centered. We also recognize the lack of bilingual programming for Spanish-speaking and Latin American communities that have deeply influenced Florida’s cultural landscape and continue to call it home.
As we work to better understand what it means to identify as Hispanic or of Latin American descent in the U.S., we are committed to organizing events that use language as a tool for inclusivity. These programs explore and elevate diverse stories through the lenses of archaeology, history, and equitable access to nature.
